Thank You, Mrs. Howe There are still a handful of parents who have not cleaned out the white manila folder from Monday. Please look at the corrected work in this folder and keep it at home. You can expect these folders to come home every Monday, and I would LOVE to see them come back empty every Tuesday!
Don't forget that next Wednesday is the final day for magazine orders to be turned in. Although I write my weekly newsflashes on Sunday, at times you will receive a newsflash midweek! Thank You, Mrs. Howe Wow! A lot has happened over the last week of school and there is much to come. A highlight of our week was receiving a visit from a local beekeeper who actually brought in her bees and answered many questions from the students in Mrs. McNish's and our class. Both classes had just finished mock interviews they created based off from their research they did on the disappearance of bees. Have your child tell you what he/she learned about our wonderful honeybees! Thank you, Mrs. McNish, for organizing this presentation! We also had our annual magazine drive kick-off on Thursday. The first wave of orders is due this Wednesday, September 27, and the last pickup date for orders is the following Wednesday. The magazine drive is one of our top fund raisers, so please help your child to sell some great magazines to friends and family! If you are interested in volunteering in the school please read the information I sent home on back-to-school night. You can also find the information on the New Boston Central School website. In math, we have already worked our way through the first half of unit 1. Please ask your children to show you how they are organizing their home links in their binders. I am working with the students on organization and teaching them to take the time to place their home links in their binder with the checklist I have given them. They will receive a new checklist with each unit of math. We have started writing our first piece of literature, our personal narratives. The students have some wonderful memories to share, and they will be focusing on narrowing their ideas and using vivid, descriptive details in their writing. On Friday the students took their first spelling test and grammar quiz. Because we keep their spelling tests in a booklet, you won't see the test come home. I can always send you scores via e-mail or send them home with your child if you prefer. The reason we keep the spelling booklets at school is because the students will be creating a spreadsheet from these scores in the future. Many children were challenge spellers this past week. The students can move in and out of the challenge spelling program from week to week. Ask your child how he/she earns the challenge word list for the week, or e-mail me if you have any questions. If I see a concern with spelling scores (low scores for more than two consecutive weeks), I will let you know. Every Monday the students will be bringing home a manilla folder with completed work in it. Please CLEAN out this folder and send it back with them on Tuesday. In social studies, we are researching different regions of our country. The finished product will include an 8 slide powerpoint presentation describing the geography, economy, and people of each region. The students are working with Mrs. McNish's class on this project. Last Wednesday, we met with our new reading buddies. The students were very excited to be working with Mrs. Prive's second graders! Our reading buddy time takes place on Wednesdays from 1:35 - 2:00. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, I will be administering the reading and math portions of NWEA. NWEA is a standardized test that gives educators a data point which helps to inform us where each student's strengths and weaknesses are in the areas of both reading and math. I hope you are all enjoying your READING CHALLENGE! This weekend offered two excellent days to take a blanket and lay out on the grass for 20 minutes a day with a great book! I'm looking forward to a great week ahead! - Mrs. Howe Thank you for attending back-to-school night. I hope I answered some of your questions and allowed you enough time to attend the Lynn Lyon's presentation. I zoomed over to the high school and made it just in time to watch her again (for the second time in three weeks!).
